Weight Lifting Equipment
63Buying home weight lifting equipment can be a great idea. Lifting at home can save time on traveling to the gym and a lot of money spent on expensive gym memberships (if you don’t collect every piece a normal gym has!). There are a lot of choices out there for someone looking to build a home gym and it helps to have some experience to know what equipment is needed for the exercises you want to do. Another thing to take note of is having the proper space to house the equipment, as well as do all the exercises. I myself had a problem performing some of my favorite exercises with the low ceilings of my former home.
Commercial weight lifting equipment would be my first choice. After moving into my new home with a large enough basement, I began to build my own home gym. For me it is important that all the equipment I I buy is new or in excellent condition. I started out looking for used weight lifting equipment online and in newspapers. The first thing that I went to look at was advertised to be really nice, but I ended up driving over 3 hours to look at some cheap weight lifting equipment that consisted of a junior sized bench and some concrete filled weight plates. After that, I ended up finding some weight lifting equipment for sale at a gym that was going out of business. I found a nice weight bench and a squat rack. They were fairly older and basic but in good condition. I ended up repainting them white and they look really good now. Going out of business sales are great places to find discount weight lifting equipment! Since then I have purchased some other pieces such as a set of dumbbells and a multi dip/pull-up machine that I got delivered from the internet.
Having my own home gym has been life changing. It is so much easier to fit into my routine. I have a lot of fun having friends come lift at my own PRIVATE facility. I have even been talking about the idea of letting my friend who is a personal trainer use it for clients. It would be a nice way to recover some of that money I spent on it!
If you don’t have enough money to buy top of the line commercial type weight lifting equipment, I suggest buying a home gym. Focus on buying quality. I remember trying out my friend’s dad’s brand new home gym and having it break while I was tying it out the first day he had it. He was mad and I was turned off from cheap home gyms forever. I know another guy who has a Bowflex home gym (that he never uses…). Although I prefer free weights, after trying it I felt like it was worth owning.
For someone who doesn’t have a lot of space or money, I would recommend getting some dumbbells and an adjustable bench. There are dozens if not hundreds of lifts that can be performed with dumbbells which would certainly build muscle and keep you fit. Something I have been interested in checking out are the Bowflex Select-tech dumbbells that allow you to adjust the weight of the dumbbells.
Stay fit in the 2010s with a home gym!
